Welcome to Marine Trades Institute, the only accredited school specializing in the marine trades in the Great Lakes Region. Marine Trades Institute is a non-profit, post-secondary trade school that offers programs focused on giving students skills and experiences that will help them succeed in their career. These 12-month programs provide hands-on training in a shop-like setting and on the water!
Now is the time! If you like working with your hands, enjoy being on the water, and want a career in the marine industry, Marine Trades Institute may be just the right fit for you!
At Marine Trades Institute, our students spend around 80% of their time in the shop. Fundamental to all programs at Marine Trades Institute is a strong focus on hands-on, applied learning which is reflected through the daily schedule during the semester. If you love boats, the outdoors, and working with your hands, then an education here may be the perfect fit for you.
The time I spent at the School prepared me for my current job by allowing me real world experience. I was given the opportunity to tour boat owners’ vessels as well as diagnose and find issues aboard. Mike Downey, a former instructor, made it a point to thoroughly explore and understand ABYC standards and how they will apply at my job. I have used these standards on multiple occasions which have allowed me to perform better in my work environment. [As a student], I was given free range to troubleshoot and diagnose engines in the test tank under supervision and given direction on what to look for specifically. This has helped me to have better troubleshooting skills.
