About Us

It started in 2005

Marine Trades Institute was established under the name “Great Lakes Boat Building School.” The school, located in Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula in the Les Cheneaux Islands, is situated in one of the wooden boat capitals of the nation. Local wooden boat enthusiasts wanted to keep the tradition and skills of wooden boat building alive, thus beginning a trade school which focused solely on wooden boats. In 2006, a 12,000 square foot facility was built and the first student enrolled that fall.

Amazing Alumni

What I love most about my current job is that I get to be on the water every day and since I am on commission, I can be as busy as I want to be. In Austin the boating industry is huge, and the demand is very high for people like me. This allows me to work as much as I’d like. Seeing different calibers of boats from a 17ft fishing boat to 60 ft yachts to 115 ft houseboats gives me a wide variety of vessels to work on and learn from. This is why I chose this location.
