Marine Trades Institute Launches Accelerated Summer Training Programs

<

CEDARVILLE, MI – May 11th, 2026 – Marine Trades Institute (MTI) is proud to announce the summer series of Accelerated Training Programs, designed to provide intensive, hands-on instruction for boating enthusiasts and aspiring professionals. These short-form courses offer beginners the opportunity to master technical skills in a condensed timeframe under the guidance of the MTI’s expert instructors.

The summer lineup kicks off with two programs focused on the essential foundations of boat construction and upkeep. The Lofting program, running from June 1 through June 5, teaches the transition from paper plans to physical molds. During this five-day hands-on experience, students learn the foundations of the lofting process, fairing, and construction developments required to create accurate patterns. Registration for this course closes on May 25.

Following the lofting program, the MTI will host a Marine Engine Maintenance course on June 19 and 20. This two-day program covers the fundamentals of both gasoline and diesel engines, teaching students how to follow manufacturer recommendations and perform seasonal maintenance. By the end of the session, participants will have built a personalized service program for their own vessels. Registration for this course closes on June 8.

Both programs are specifically tailored for beginners and emphasize a “learning by doing” philosophy. Each course is instructor-led, ensuring participants receive direct feedback and practical experience in a professional shop environment.

Space is limited and interested participants are encouraged to register early. For more information on programs and registration visit www.marinetrades.edu.

CEDARVILLE, Michigan – April 24th, 2026 –  The Marine Trades Institute (MTI) is pleased to announce the successful re-accreditation of its Marine Technology School, home to the Marine Service Technology Program. Under the guidance of experienced instructors Kevin Flood and Mark Bohmier, the program has once again met the rigorous standards required for recognition by the Marine Trades Accreditation Program (MTAP).

This designation, granted following a comprehensive site visit and a unanimous vote by the MTAP Review Commission, confirms that MTI continues to provide consistent, career-focused instruction that meets the evolving needs of the marine industry. MTAP is established by the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC), a nonprofit organization that sets global safety standards for boat building and repair.

“Receiving this re-accreditation is a testament to the hard work of our faculty, the dedication of our students, and our ongoing commitment to excellence in marine training,” said Dr. Brody Waybrant, Interim President of MTI. “We are honored that the MTAP Review Commission recognizes the value of our program and our vital role in preparing the next generation of skilled marine technicians.”

The accreditation process involved a deep evaluation of MTI’s curriculum, facilities, and industry partnerships. Reviewers commended the institute for its commitment to a highly relevant curriculum taught by faculty who are active industry veterans. By serving as both dedicated educators and working professionals, MTI instructors ensure that students receive training grounded in the realities of modern service yard operations. Furthermore, the review highlighted the school’s success in fostering strong relationships with regional marine industry leaders; a collaboration that ensures the program remains aligned with current technical trends and secures vital material support from regional boat builders, service yards, and dealers.

“It’s exciting to see schools like this leading the way in marine service education,” said Sarah Devlin, ABYC Foundation Accreditation Director. “There’s a real demand for skilled technicians in this field, and programs like these are preparing students for rewarding careers with long-term growth, strong salaries, and opportunities across the industry.”

With this achievement, the Marine Technology School at MTI reaffirms its position as a top-tier training facility. As the marine industry continues to demand highly trained technicians, MTI remains committed to bridging the gap between classroom theory and real-world service yard operations.

LES CHENEAUX, MI – April 27th, 2026 – The Marine Trades Institute (MTI) and the Les Cheneaux Community Foundation (LCCF) are proud to announce a $5,000 matching gift challenge to support the next generation of marine craftsmen. This initiative honors the enduring legacy of George H. Nickels, a master boat builder whose craftsmanship helped define the Great Lakes sailing community for decades.

George H. Nickels was a lifelong boater and co-owner of the Nickels Boat Company. Throughout his career, he oversaw the construction of over 1,400 Lightning Class sailboats and hundreds of Rebel Class vessels. Beyond his skill with wood and fiberglass, George was known for his unwavering willingness to help others, often telling those in need, “I can’t do it today, but I can do it tomorrow.”

To honor George and his contributions to the boating community, the Nickels-Stiner Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund was established to provide a “Helping Hand Up” to students at the Marine Trades Institute. This year, the endowment will award $2,127 to a student pursuing a career in the marine trades. To further strengthen this support, the Stiner family has offered to match every dollar donated to the fund up to $5,000.

“Mr. and Mrs. Stiner, the initiators of this endowed scholarship, believe as George did that no one succeeds in life without the assistance of others,” says Tom Coates, Development Director at MTI. “By meeting this match, our community can turn $5,000 into $10,000 that will be added to the endowment’s principal. This will significantly grow the interest generated by the account which in turn will increase the awarded scholarship amount for MTI students for years to come.”

By utilizing an endowment model, the principal investment remains permanently in the account, generating interest that is awarded to Marine Trades Institute students. As the principal grows, so does the annual award available to students. By offering this matching opportunity, the Stiners aim to grow the investment by $10,000, significantly increasing the yearly support available and ensuring that George’s “helping hand” remains available for generations to come.

Members of the boating community, Lightning and Rebel class enthusiasts, and supporters of hands-on training and vocational education are encouraged to contribute. Donations can be made through the Les Cheneaux Community Foundation by designating the “George Henry Nickels and the Les and Jackie Stiner Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund.”

The Marine Trades Institute recently hosted a successful hands-on technical workshop in partnership with Superior Industrial Solutions.

The multi-day session in January saw Superior Industrial Solutions representatives Chad Kuipers and Joe Hartley visit MTI’s campus in Cedarville to provide students with specialized training in mold repair and vacuum infusion preparation.

According to a school announcement, the workshop offered students a unique opportunity to engage with professional-grade materials, including fiberglass, vinyl ester resins and structural putties. Students performed a comprehensive restoration of a boat mold with guidance from the Superior Industrial Solutions team. Throughout this process, students also learned the critical science behind the craft, including proper resin and catalyst mixing and the vital importance of monitoring ambient temperature for effective curing.

New facility fuels growth as Marine Trades Institute Purchases Taylor Lumber Property

Cedarville, Michigan – March 2025 – Excitement abounds at Marine Trades Institute in Cedarville, Michigan, as the institution embarks on a new chapter of growth and innovation. Following a rebranding that formally established the esteemed Boat Building School and the cutting-edge Marine Technology School under the more encompassing name of Marine Trades Institute – the organization is poised to further elevate marine education in the region.

Driven by growing needs within the marine industry and a commitment to providing the best possible training experience, the Marine Trades Institute has initiated an ambitious expansion plan. This expansion gained significant momentum with the Institute’s recent acquisition of the historic Taylor Lumber property. This strategic move not only secures vital space for the Institute’s continued growth but also honors the enduring legacy of Frank Taylor, a visionary businessman and longtime supporter of the school.

In 1960, Frank Taylor acquired the property for use as a sawmill and planing mill. He then diversified into building materials, establishing the first lumber yard in the area – Taylor Lumber Company in Cedarville, MI. This venue served as the foundation for his expansion throughout the Upper Peninsula, ultimately leading to the creation of Tri County Building Centers. Over the past 50+ years, Tri County Building Centers has significantly contributed to the development of the Eastern Upper Peninsula. When Frank Taylor retired in 2004, he passed ownership to long-time employee Brien Hanna. Under Hanna’s leadership Tri County Building Centers has expanded further, now serving six locations throughout the U.P. including Cedarville, St. Ignace, Pickford, Detour, Paradise, and Sault Ste. Marie.

While the Taylor property is being sold to the Marine Trades Institute, Tri County Building Centers has purchased a new sales building located at 44 E. M134 in Cedarville, and plans to continue providing building material delivery services to the area. “We’re not going anywhere,” says Brien Hanna, owner of Tri County Building Centers. “By consolidating our locations, we’ll be able to remain competitive and successful in this industry despite challenges presented in today’s market. With a location in Pickford, we’ve got all the building inventory you might need just a few miles up the road, and through our delivery service we offer multi-million dollar inventory right at your fingertips.”

“This business has grown exponentially,” says Hanna. “We’ve overcome and embraced a lot of changes over the years. It’s a competitive industry, and it’s important that you be able to adapt to stay successful. There are very few independent lumber companies, let alone ones with operations so near to each other. We are confident that by consolidating our Cedarville and Pickford locations, while maintaining a sales and accounting office here in town, we can continue to serve the community with the same great service they have come to expect from our company.”

“I’ve been grateful to have Frank Taylor as a personal mentor, and when I shared this idea with him he was elated,” says Hanna. “Frank was a longtime supporter of the Boat School and viewed this opportunity the same as I did – a win-win. This is an opportunity to help drive the continued success of both ourselves and the Marine Trades Institute.”

For the Marine Trades Institute, the purchase of the new building couldn’t have come at a more opportune time. “Growth is the word that best describes the last few years at the school,” says Nikki Storey, President of Marine Trades Institute. “Our class sizes have expanded, our staff has grown, industry partnerships have flourished, and interest in our programs has surged since our accreditation. While restructuring as the Marine Trades Institute created valuable space for our programs to expand, the demand for training continues to outpace our current capacity.”

“With the acquisition of the Taylor property, we are poised to meet this growing demand and solidify Cedarville’s position as the premier destination for marine training in the Midwest,” Storey continues. “I’ll add an additional “win” onto Mr. Hanna’s “win-win” mentality with this sale, because this transition will not only drive continued success for ourselves and Tri County Building Centers, but also amplifies our economic impact in Cedarville – making this a win-win-win for the entire community.”

“This year also marks the 20th anniversary for our school,” says Storey. “We are deeply grateful to the visionary leaders who charted this course for us, the unwavering support of individuals like Mr. Taylor and Mr. Hanna, and the incredible backing of our community. As we celebrate this milestone, we look forward to a future where Marine Trades Institute continues to thrive, shaping the future of the marine industry by empowering the next generation of professionals.”

Cedarville, Michigan – February 28th, 2025 – Great Lakes Boat Building School is pleased to announce its rebranding as Marine Trades Institute, a new name encompassing the growth of the school’s educational programs and reflecting its expanded role in training the next generation of marine workers. The rebrand honors the school’s deep roots in boat building and craftsmanship while positioning the Institute to continue expanding programming to serve anyone looking to enter the world of marine skilled trades.

Rebrand Announcement Students

The Marine Trades Institute is restructuring its programs to enhance its educational offerings and grow its audience to better reach those seeking careers and training in the marine industry. To achieve these goals, the Institute will transition its current programs into two distinct schools. The Boat Building School will house the school’s flagship Comprehensive Career Boat Building Program, and any future wooden or specialized boat building programs. The Marine Technology School will house the Marine Service Technology Program and future certifications in areas like marine electronics. This restructuring will empower each school to independently grow and adapt its programs, informing students of the opportunities with marine careers.

The decision to rebrand was carefully considered by GLBBS leadership and deemed necessary to the school’s long term success. By restructuring the Boat Building School and Marine Technology School under the broader Marine Trades Institute name, it will enable the organization to better compete for federal funding and open doors to new training opportunities for future students. The new name better aligns with the school’s national impact, as its alumni contribute to the marine industry across the country and students come from all across the United States and Canada.

“We’re proud of our history and the incredible legacy of the Great Lakes Boat Building School, which has shaped so many careers,” said Nikki Storey, President of Marine Trades Institute. “As we expand, the new name helps us reach those looking to become skilled in marine trades while allowing us to embrace a wider audience and continue to grow our programming and impact. We remain steadfast to our founding principles of craftsmanship and hands-on training, which have cemented GLBBS as a respected institution in the Great Lakes region.”

“We’re excited about the future,” said Joe Reid, Chairman of the Board.

“This rebrand represents both evolution and continuity—bringing fresh opportunities to the school and providing new opportunities to those looking at the skilled trades as a career opportunity, all while staying true to the values that have made us who we are.”
