With Marine Trades Institute’s nearly 100% placement rate of its graduates over the past six years, we’re addressing the most critical need in the marine industry: a dire qualified workforce shortage. Currently, Marine Trades Institute has an annual graduation capacity of 24 students, the industry is demanding more.
This industry demand is the impetus behind the “Come Aboard, Launch Careers” campaign to fund a 10,000 square foot marine skilled trades training facility with contemporary equipment and technology to train more qualified marine professionals. A successful campaign will fund instructional infrastructure enabling Marine Trades Institute to double the annual graduation class to 50 or more students!
Not only will a successful campaign address current and emerging needs in the marine industry but the rippling economic effect will originate from the Eastern U.P., reverberating throughout Michigan, the Great Lakes Region and beyond.
The time I spent at the School prepared me for my current job by allowing me real world experience. I was given the opportunity to tour boat owners’ vessels as well as diagnose and find issues aboard. Mike Downey, a former instructor, made it a point to thoroughly explore and understand ABYC standards and how they will apply at my job. I have used these standards on multiple occasions which have allowed me to perform better in my work environment. [As a student], I was given free range to troubleshoot and diagnose engines in the test tank under supervision and given direction on what to look for specifically. This has helped me to have better troubleshooting skills.
